The Henna Wars Blog Tour

When Dimple Met Rishi meets Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda in this rom com about two teen girls with rival henna businesses.
When Nishat comes out to her parents, they say she can be anyone she wants—as long as she isn’t herself. Because Muslim girls aren’t lesbians. Nishat doesn’t want to hide who she is, but she also doesn’t want to lose her relationship with her family. And her life only gets harder once a childhood friend walks back into her life.

Flávia is beautiful and charismatic and Nishat falls for her instantly. But when a school competition invites students to create their own businesses, both Flávia and Nishat choose to do henna, even though Flávia is appropriating Nishat’s culture. Amidst sabotage and school stress, their lives get more tangled—but Nishat can’t quite get rid of her crush on Flávia, and realizes there might be more to her than she realized.

Review:

The Henna Wars by Adiba Jaigirdar is a novel showing the reader how gossip can manipulate and control lives. After Nishat attends her cousin's wedding, she realizes that she needs to tell her parents that she is gay so that they may change their expectations of her. Nishat doesn't expect her parents to take this news well or that it would go over well in their Bengali Muslin community. Since there is expectations in the whole community, gossip is a huge factor on how people interact with each other.

Nishat is even having a hard time at school. Her school rival Chyna likes to gossip and spread rumors. One time she spread a rumor about Nishat's family's restaurant. Chyna and her cousin Flavia decide to start up a Henna business  for a class project just because they think Henna is pretty.

The Henna Wars tackles tough subjects like racism and homophobia. It also tackles the differences of of cultures and people.I felt like the author did a good job making them appropriate for a a young audience. One of the disappointing things to me is I felt like the author did a lot of telling vs showing in the store. She says a lot of things to the reader vs using a style of writing to show the reader. I really thought that tackling the subject of gossiping was important. People don't always realize how much gossip can hurt people.
