A poignant exploration of
family and the ties that bind, perfect for fans of Far From the Tree, from New
York Times bestselling author Cynthia Hand.
Today Melly had us writing
letters to our babies…
Cassandra McMurtrey has the
best parents a girl could ask for. They’ve given Cass a life she wouldn’t trade
for the world. She has everything she needs—except maybe the one thing she
wants. Like, to know who she is. Where she came from. Questions her adoptive
parents can’t answer, no matter how much they love her.
But eighteen years ago,
someone wrote Cass a series of letters. And they may just hold the answers Cass
has been searching for.
Alternating between Cass’s
search for answers and letters from the pregnant teen who gave her up for
adoption, this voice-driven narrative is the perfect read for fans of Nina
LaCour and Jandy Nelson.

Favorite Quotes:
The universe unfolds as it should.
It's completely possible to be surrounded by people and still totally alone.
You're really classy zebras.
Actually, I‘m kind of making it all up on the spot. My improv skills at their finest.
I'm under the same sun as you, the same moon, walking the same Earth, and I'll be thing about you every day, every step. I'll be hoping for the best. I'll be loving you.
That's the future, baby star. That's what I know to be true, because I'll be there too, even if you don't know me, even if you can't see the ties that bind us.
There will be a story behind those makes. Our story. Yours and mine.
They took a chance on me. They picked me. They loved me.
Screw you universe, I think. But I also kind of think, please help?
I‘m completely relaxed. See?“ I give her a terrified gritted-teeth type smile.
Review:
The How and The Why by Cynthia Hand is an incredible tale of a girl trying to find her birth mother. This story is so beautiful and heartbreaking but I also loved that it had hope. I think Hand did an incredible job with this book. It is such a powerful story and I really enjoyed it.Cass is such a great character. I love how she is so honest yet so unsure of herself. I could relate to her struggles. Cass was trying to really figure things out now that she is 18 and I really enjoyed that. I felt like this was a heartfelt story. Cass grows so much in this story. I was able to really appreciate her growth.
I really enjoyed the birth mother's perspective through her letters. I thought it brought a really unique story together. I don't think people realize how important adoption is. Hand is such a great novelist so I am glad she decided to write a book about adoption. I think adoption is very important and impacts a lot of people. I try to keep a lot of my families life off of here. I wanted to make a mention that I have a sibling that is adopted. It was one of the best decisions I think my parents ever made. Adoption affects more than just the parents, the birth parents, and the individual. It affects everyone involved. I like that someone is highlighting it in a book.
