By Your Side by Kasie West was a bit disappointing to me. I am not a huge contemporary reader but I have always enjoyed West's contemporaries. I feel like By Your Side fell a bit short. Autumn was not a desirable character. I felt like she was a bit self centered especially since she wasn't willing to explain her behavior to her friends. Dax on the other hand was great most of the time. There are a few things that I don't like about Dax but he is a much better character than Autumn.
When Autumn and Dax get stuck in a library for three days in the middle of winter, so many things can go wrong. these two find a way to get along and survive. Then something starts to develop between the two of them and neither one cares for that to happen. Autumn comes from the popular crowd and Dax is a foster kid that everyone likes to avoid. I feel like this book is full of so many cliches.
I was a bit disappointed in this contemporary by West. I think this story could have used more depth. The characters were so hard to love. Autumn forgives her friends way too fast for things to where it doesn't feel realistic at all. Everything was too light and fluffy for me. This won't stop me from picking up another Kasie West book because I still think she writes some of the best young adult contemporary out there.
